fDi magazine - August 2007 - African Countries of the Future awards competition - similar to the Foreign Direct Investment magazine research in other regions of the world.  There were also articles about Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), the tax incentives in export processing zones in Africa, and sponsored presentations about the LADOL Free Zone in Nigeria and about Swaziland.

Scroll down for the directory of African investment promotion agency contacts for economic development, and links to other information resources such as chambers of commerce, research sources, professional service providers, and other contacts whose work supports the planning and development of foreign direct investment projects - FDI - in Africa.
Please contact us if you may be interested in expanding your business into Africa.  The "Seek Advice" section outlines helpful background topics for us to support your business investment project plans.  A simple fax-back form can be downloaded for convenience.

We also welcome feedback from executives about their "lessons learned" and "proven solutions", such as useful professional service providers and other helpful contacts found though their own experience at developing and managing business operations in Africa.  We can share such insights openly or in confidence, without attribution to the sources, to help other executives and advisors benefit from such experience for their own investment plans.

While Robert Mugabe has been very critical of remarks made by US Ambassador Christopher Dell and others about what has been done to the people and economy of Zimbabwe in recent years, it should be intuitively obvious why we never receive any enquiries at all about business investment in Zimbabwe.  It has nothing to do with statements by US government officials or US government policies - or the British, either.  This breadbasket of Africa has become yet another basket case under Mugabe. Secretary Condoleeza Rice has reportedly referred to Zimbabwe as an "outpost of tyranny" in the region.  Tyrants often try to distract attention from domestic problems of their own creation by blaming everything on leaders in other countries, as Mugabe did again recently at a WFP event in Italy by blaming Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Bush for their policies.  He may have bluntly told US Ambassador Dell where to go, but he is clearly leading the way there.
We welcome the recent initiatives of the G8 Summit leaders, led by Tony Blair, and the Live8 concert organizers, to call world attention to the ongoing economic development and humanitarian needs and challenges of Africa, including the needs and opportunities for private sector capital investment projects and job creation by international companies.

The Millennium Challenge Account initiative of President Bush focuses foreign aid on countries which implement policies that are favorable to economic development and the effective use of such aid, rather than waste through corruption and mismanagement.  At a time of budget cuts, however, such programs are often vulnerable without visible public support.

Note that we are not a financial institution or a source of project funding, nor are we a non-profit charity or a source of assistance for personal charity or investment decisions.  We provide links to humanitarian organizations because many executives who invest in Africa may also wish to selectively support some of the organizations which do good work there. Please help to end the scourge of "advance funds" fraud schemes and identity theft in Africa, such as those persistent e-mails offering to transfer millions of dollars.  Criminal fraud activity and corruption in Africa is a major obstacle to economic development there.  Organized crime, and even piracy in places like Somalia (ships, not software), deters foreign investment.
We maintain a selective directory of cross-border humanitarian and philanthropic services for development.  Our focus is the support of economic development anywhere in the world through professional referrals for the planning of capital investment projects by companies.

Companies and individual executives or foundations often support charitable work in Africa.

MIGA (The World Bank - Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency) is very actively engaged in the development of investment promotion organizations in Africa and other initiatives to build the infrastructure and capacity to support private investment there.

MIGA also publishes FDI Xchange, PrivatizationLink, and IPAnet (for investment promotion agencies).  FDI Promotion Center assists developing countries with marketing resources.

Congratulations to 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prof. Wangari Muta Maathai of Kenya for her contributions to sustainable development, democracy and peace.

Her inspirational lecture was also broadcast through the Worldview program of Chicago Public Radio, where an audio clip is available, which is well worth hearing to capture the passion of her many years of commitment to this cause.  It is an exceptional lecture on development and the linkages between environmental issues and democratic governance and peace.  A full transcript is on the Nobel website.  She was also an inspiring guest at the National Press Club, where her comments were broadcast on C-Span.

Explanation of column headings above
  •  Organizations are generally sorted in postal code order so that locations which are geographically close to each other will usually (not always) be grouped together.  This is a selective directory, even though the state directory is more comprehensive than the very selective one we will maintain at the regional level to highlight the organizations which support our work or are found to be of frequent interest for the convenience of the executives and business advisors we serve.
  •  Scope : is the area served by the organization, and postal code.  We may include thumbnail maps which expand to show information about participating areas, or link directly to good maps or GIS research tools on the organization's website.
  •  Contacts : relationship leader at GDI Solutions for maintaining information about contacts in this area.  If there is a working relationship through our various GUIDE services, we also list the key organization contact, phone, and optional e-mail.
  •  Website and other resources : Aside from the main website link, we may include other direct links to highlight special features of expected interest to executives, especially if they might not be readily noticed by just visiting the website.  A good example of this is when relevant content is actually maintained somewhere else, such as a regional website rather than the local one, so that one would otherwise need to know to follow the available links between the websites.
The default for all other columns is "No" unless the organization supports our work.
  •  Survey : areas which have responded to our GUIDE Network Survey, with a link to their response for convenience if published (optional) and highlighted at the top.  This is often useful as an executive summary at the "long list" stage of location selection.
  •  Profile : participates in our GUIDE Area Profile service (also highlighted at the top of the page).  This involves a closer working relationship to maintain more timely and detailed knowledge of the area throughout the year, and also involves a more detailed executive summary on the website, with many relevant links.  If there are significant incentives in the area, we may also link to a GUIDE Incentives Profile.
All area representatives are encouraged to reply to the free GUIDE Network Survey. (PDF)   Executives who use this service are encouraged to respond to our free Executive Survey, which helps us to continuously improve, or contact us for assistance with specific projects.  We also welcome introductory contact by professional service providers with proven experience supporting capital investment projects in Africa by foreign companies, and can highlight such capabilities. The presence, absence, or position of any organization in these directories, or their position on the lists, does not imply any endorsement or opinion about their services, nor by them about our own.

The selections are simply intended to be helpful to executives and their professional advisors who may be unaware of such contacts in the region, or how to reach their websites quickly.  Please contact us directly for relevant introductions or any additional contacts, market knowledge, and research which we don't publish.

Refer also to our Bookshelf suggestions.

This table will highlight contact in the region and other include relevant links, such as to published GUIDE Area Profiles, Area Surveys, other GUIDE services, and websites.

We list contacts of potential interest to investors on a very selective basis, as in the case of the following initial examples.  Suggestions are welcome for other useful sources for investors, and please report any broken website links.

Forward scam e-mails, faxes, or letters (marked "No Financial Loss - For Your Database") to the US Secret Service, Financial Crimes Division, 419 Task Force, 950 H Street, Washington DC 20001-4518 or by e-mail to 419.fcd@usss.treas.gov  so that they can investigate as appropriate, for which they have agents and support in Nigeria and elsewhere.  Do not expect a reply, as hundreds of such scams are reported daily.

Please note that the scams are not limited to "advance fee" fraud, duping people into giving financial account information or money.  There are variations including US visa fraud activities, and corporate identity theft (using corporate materials to create the illusion of a legitimate business transaction or references).  These are criminal activities and can be dangerous for more than financial losses.  Please report them.
